School Champion

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School is for children from 3-11 years old with 343 pupils on roll. Our mission statement is “Loving and learning together on our journey following Jesus, with Mary as our guiding star.” This year we have created an art studio and each year group gets to work with our resident artist one afternoon a week. The art has been woven into other subjects, creating curriculum connectors and an inspiring, creative overall curriculum for each year group. The art studio has had a huge impact on the children’s well being, perseverance, art skills, love of the arts, creativity and confidence. For this half term’s project, the year 5 children have linked their art work with RE, looking at inspirational people and how we can inspire others. We were inspired ourselves by the work of Hannah Höch and her photomontages. The children looked at, collected and selected images of faces from papers, media and people and then created their own photomontages. The children were able to create abstract pencil studies from their photomontages as well. They also believed like Hannah Höch, that art should be fun and should not always have to make sense. We also talked about all children believing in themselves and how we are all different and unique and that beauty comes from within. “We all hold beauty and inspiration.” This is a very important quality and message that we should not compare ourselves and our beauty to others but celebrate our individuality at all times.
