School Champion

"Oh, the places we'll go..." Together, we create a safe and fun place to learn, explore and grow. As our tagline suggests, we love all aspects of the arts in our school! We are a 3 form entry primary school in Ellesmere Port. We do lots to raise standards as well as the profile of art. Currently, we are part of the Artsmark programme; we have an annual Arts Week; and we do lots of cross-curricular art activities. All the children's work for the dot - art Schools competition was inspired by their geography study of Brazil, South America. To begin with, the children looked at Brazilian favelas and discussed how they were the dwellings of poorer people. The children noticed that these buildings had a certain symmetry to them. Then, we looked at artists that use buildings as their inspiration. We particularly looked at the artist Hundertwasser, the photographer and artist Didier Fournet and Barbara Platti. We then merged their styles to create our own version. We started by picking out lines and shapes that we could use to create an image and sketched out initial ideas. When we were happy with these, we sketched out our final piece. Then, we used a restricted colour palette of watercolour paints which we had previously agreed on. By choosing random buildings to colour, we achieved an effect that replicated the randomness of the Favelas. After the paint had dried, we added the marker pen and picked out bits of detail using pastels. We are extremely happy with our results! Championed by Merseyside Pension Fund c/o CBRE
