St Andrew's is a one form entry primary school in Maghull, Merseyside. Our school vision is 'Together in God's love, we learn, inspire and grow'. At St Andrew's our children follow the St Andrew's UNIQUE curriculum. During lessons around Diversity, the children were intrigued by the artist Jen Michel Basquiat. As we were learning about our endangered planet in Geography and PSHE activities, we decided to link the two ideas together as we learnt that Basquiat, quite often, included social commentary in his work. The children used acrylics to create backgrounds and simulate the bright colours Basquiat used to create a canvas on urban walls, and then used wax pastels to create animal caricatures, with Basquiat's distinctive outlining. Some of the children decided to use cut-outs from magazines to add social commentary to their work and then took further inspiration from cartoon-like imagery, including crowns and doodles.
